Tell us about Camp Ponkawissett’s partnership with Ponkapoag Outdoor Center and site
We are delighted to continue our partnership with the Greater YMCA Ponkapoag Outdoor Center. While the YMCA manages the MDC Blue Hills property we are able to access the incredible woods, pond, meadows and bog. Ponkapoag’s site includes 2 outdoor swimming pools, ropes course, sports courts, playing field, nature center, covered pavilions, infirmary, and creative arts center.
Site procedures
As mentioned, the site will offer to our campers true access to the Blue Hills. Since the program is located in the heart of the Blue Hills, the access is remote. When driving to the site during pick up and drop off, the road system will be directed and managed by site staff to allow when cars can drive in and drive out. The will be well managed by a communication system that should not pose too many restrictions. If driving to the site in the non open and closing times, follow signs to Ponkapoag Outdoor Center, on the right hand side. Maps and procedure will be sent to families once registered to our program.
Is Camp Ponkawissett licensed from the city and/or state?
Yes, in Massachusetts, recreational camps for children must be inspected and licensed by the local board of heath. In order to be licensed, the camp must meet all regulatory standards established by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH).
If you would like a copy of the state regulations of additional information concerning recreational camps for children, go to the MA Department of Public Health Website.
Is transportation available from my area?
Transportation is available to Ponkawissett from many Boston neighborhoods. Please see our bus stop schedule on the transportation page.
I work from 8am until 4:30 pm, do you offer extended day programs?
We do! Morning extended day is 7 am-9 am and afternoon extended day is 4:30 pm-6 pm. Youth participate in various games, arts & crafts, and self choice activities. Activities choices are driven by campers’ requests and creativity.
Are there any programs for children older than 11?
At this time we no longer offer a Counselor in Training program due to lack of demand. We still do offer a Junior Counselor program and employment for those ages 16-17 years of age.
Do you offer scholarships/financial aid?
Yes. Our scholarships, called camperships, are available on a first-come basis. Please see the dates and rates page for more information.
Can my child attend with a friend?
Yes. While children from various groups interact at many points during the day, in general, camper groups are normally divided by age. However, we will do our best to meet requests under special circumstances. There is also an incentive for returning campers to invite a friend to attend camp. If the friend attends, the referring camper may opt to receive either a $25 gift card to Target, or a US Savings bond.
Can my child attend multiple sessions?
Yes. If you desire, your child may attend all sessions of Ponkawissett.
How do you hire and screen staff?
Camp Ponkawissett staff are at least 19 years of age or older. All staff members fill out a thorough application, undergo an interview process, and three references are checked. All staff undergo a criminal background and sexual offender check as well. We look for people with camp experience or experience with children, people who are responsible and mature, good listeners, capable of learning, cheerful, outgoing, and with a good sense of humor. Staff participate in an intensive week-long training process, and in-service training happens throughout the summer.
What about lunches and snacks?
Campers are to bring a nourishing lunch, snack, and water every day. It is important that our campers have the nourishment and water assisting them in their active and hot day. It is the first step in keeping your child safe at camp. Please note refrigeration is limited, so food items that spoil easily should not be included in your child’s lunch.
