Zoo Camp Staff

Our ZooCamp staff is unbelievable-and, along with Zoo personnel--they create a unique and close-up encounter with animals unlike any other camp program in the Boston area. Campers feel total comfort with these new experiences, because of our nurturing leadership.

“I love spending my summer at camp because it combines my love of the outdoors, educating kids and working with our great staff.  I love seeing campers excel at the new things they try each summer, whether it be learning new swimming skills, leading a song at closing circle, mastering a new game or overcoming their fear of that insect they have never seen before.  I spent my summers growing up at day and overnight camps, so I love being able to share the amazing camp experience with my campers.”

Amy May is the year round Program Director for Camp Fire USA and this will be her 6th summer as a camp director with Camp Fire USA.  It will be her 2nd summer at ZooCamp, as Amy has been our Ponkiwanee and Ponkiwissett Camp Director. Amy’s background is in Environmental Studies and she holds a BS from Rutgers University and an MS from Antioch University.  She comes from a long camp background as both a camper and staff at day and overnight camps including three summers as a counselor at Camp Sprout Lake in Verbank, NY and as a volunteer organizer of Kids4Peace Vermont.  In addition to her camp experience Amy has worked as an environmental educator, after school teacher, Hebrew School teacher, and youth group adviser.

Amy and her staff undergo a rigorous background check (including a CORI and SORI check), along with a 40 hour staff training each year. Staff are  selected based on their skills working with children, science knowledge, personality, experience and dedication to safety and learning while at ZooCamp.

Our small camp operates a high staff ratio, each small group of campers (7-11 youth)  is led by a senior counselor (typically a recent college graduate, graduate student) and as is assisted by a junior counselor (16-18 years of age.) Our staff are paired with campers based on their abilities to work with a specific age group and are assigned that group for the summer. Our counselors are supported by our assistant camp director and director.
